Kappa Alpha Theta's philanthropy is CASA, Court Appointed Special Advocates. CASA was started by a Seattle judge. The mission of CASA is to speak for the best interests of abused or neglected children who are involved in juvenile courts. CASA volunteers are assigned by a judge and it is their job to speak up for the children in court in order to make a sound decision for the children's future. Since 1990, CASA has expanded its program significantly. Currently 900 CASA programs exist with 70,000 CASA volunteers. For more information on CASA visit their website at www.NationalCASA.org
The ladies of Eta Lambda are passionate about helping CASA, but are also involved with other service projects and fundraising events throughout the Santa Clara Community. For her participation in community programs, each Theta receives "service points" for each activity she does. At the end of the quarter, a prize is given to the two Thetas who receive the most points. Many of our members are active in the Santa Clara Community Action Program (SCCAP) and have participated in Immersion trips and Arrupe Placement. Our members also annually form teams for the Santa Clara Relay for Life, which raises money for Cancer victims and research.
Eta Lambda's main philanthropy event for CASA is our Dodgeball tournament. Members of both the Greek and non-Greek community are invited to form teams to participate in the tournament. Each team pays a registration fee that helps raise money for CASA. Each team also receives one or more Theta coaches to guide and cheer them on during their games. After the tournament, Eta Lambda hosts a lunch for all of the teams to nourish the appetites of the hard-working athletes.
